Alexandrite

A rare variety of chrysoberyl that shows a colour change effect, depending on the lighting in which it is viewed.

A phenomenal gemstone, this is a variety of chrysoberyl (a beryllium aluminium oxide)sc coloured by chromium, which shows the extraordinary property of changing colour depending on the quality of incident light.

Alexandrite is a great gem in terms of value and durability.

The first Russian alexandrite was discovered in the 1830s in the Urals and was named in honour of Tsar Alexander II. Fine Russian alexandrite exhibits a colour-change from green to red, as does alexandrite from Sri Lanka, while Brazilian material shows a very different blue to purple change. Alexandrite is a great gem in terms of value as well as durability, rating 8.5 on Moh’s hardness scale.
