
Emerald
The green variety of the mineral beryl, and one of the most famous gemstones.
First used by the ancient Egyptians, today emerald is appreciated all around the world and very highly valued. The most famous emeralds come from Colombia, with Zambia and Brazil also important producing countries.
Emerald is one of the oldest known gemstones.
Inclusions - known as jardins - are common and fully accepted but may make emeralds less tough than sapphire, for example. Emerald is the birthstone for May, and measures 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
