Tanzanite

Blue to purple to violet, this variety of zoisite was discovered in Tanzania in the 1960s.

Tanzanite is the blue and purple variety of zoisite, discovered in 1967 in Tanzania. It was named after its producing country by Tiffany and Co in 1968.

Tanzanites can show a very vivid blue/purple colour when heat treated.

Tanzanite is famous for an extremely strong trichroism, whereby it exhibits three different colours - blue, pink and yellow - depending on the angle of viewing. Heating can remove the yellow, strengthening the blue. Tanzanite is the birthstone for December, and only measures 6-6.5 on Mohs scale of hardness.
