Described as ‘one of nature’s true treasures’, this 143.33-carat colour change garnet from Tanzania is exceptional in both size and quality. Hewn from the 250-carat rough - the largest in the mine’s history - the cushion-shaped, brilliant-step cut exhibits a distinct change from brownish green, in daylight, to rich red, under incandescent light. Untreated and transparent, a top quality garnet like this - displaying both Usambara and Alexandrite effects - is extremely rare. Eye-clean, this garnet exhibits only one discreet feather and, under the microscope, an exquisitely formed fingerprint pattern. Possessing extraordinary characteristics - the kind more usually found showcased in museums - a gemstone of such beauty and scarcity is truly a wonder to behold. Shipping and secure viewing is available on request.

This is a very unusual and interesting variety of one of the largest gem groups. In recent years, particularly stunning garnets displaying the phenomenon of colour change - that is, displaying distinct differences in colour under different lighting conditions - have been found in East Africa, notably Madagascar and Tanzania. Such garnets tend to be along the pyrope-spessartine range, and can show colours from red, pink, orange, green and even blue or violet. Often trace amounts of vanadium contribute to this special colour change property. Gems changing from red to green, and even purple to blue, have been compared to alexandrite, and such special gems are highly prized by collectors.

Gembridge Members source their gem-quality stones from countries all over the world, including many famous regions and mines. While origin is not an indicator of quality, it does provide context for buyers.

Origins listed on Gembridge may be stated as an opinion on a laboratory report or described by the Seller familiar with the stone’s provenance.

Gemstones come in many different forms. On Gembridge, we describe each by its shape in simple terms – round, square, cushion etc. Where relevant, we may also list the style of cutting, such as brilliant, step etc.

Although untreated gems are highly prized, there are many universally accepted treatments that enhance a gemstone’s beauty, including heating (for colour), and oiling (for clarity). On Gembridge, all treatments must be fully disclosed, so you know exactly what kind of gemstone you are purchasing.
