This magnificent 23.94 ct sapphire from Madagascar is vivid-blue, aka “Royal Blue”, with absolutely no form of enhancement - extremely rare in a stone this size. Oval-shaped and exhibiting good proportions, this is a clean stone with brilliant reflections. There is a slight colour band, which should disappear once the stone is set in jewellery, and a small feather deep inside, but not visible to the naked eye. All in all, a superb piece.

Tony Brooke Chairman

A broad family of gems of every colour except red (which is ruby). Most famous is the blue variety, known simply as ‘sapphire’, while all other colours are known as ‘fancy’ varieties, such as pink sapphire, purple sapphire, yellow sapphire etc. Sapphire has been mined and traded for thousands of years. Sri Lanka is one of the oldest origins, for blue and other colours, while Burma and Kashmir have traditionally produced the most valuable blue gems. Blues and greens especially are also found in America and Australia. More recently, Africa - especially Madagascar and Tanzania - has become an important producing country for all colours. The most common treatments are heating and diffusion, which must be disclosed. Sapphire is a popular engagement ring choice (especially since Prince Charles gave Lady Diana a sapphire engagement ring, which later passed to Katherine from Prince William) as it represents loyalty and trust as well as nobility and royalty. Sapphire is 9 on Mohs Scale of hardness and the birthstone for September.

This particular trade term refers to the most highly saturated pure blues, usually of medium to darker tones. For some, this is also a quality term which should only be applied to unheated gems of high clarity. Traditionally the term arose from comparison with some of the finest gems coming out of Burma, but today there is no specific origin association.

Gembridge Members source their gem-quality stones from countries all over the world, including many famous regions and mines. While origin is not an indicator of quality, it does provide context for buyers.

Origins listed on Gembridge may be stated as an opinion on a laboratory report or described by the Seller familiar with the stone’s provenance.

Gemstones come in many different forms. On Gembridge, we describe each by its shape in simple terms – round, square, cushion etc. Where relevant, we may also list the style of cutting, such as brilliant, step etc.

Although untreated gems are highly prized, there are many universally accepted treatments that enhance a gemstone’s beauty, including heating (for colour), and oiling (for clarity). On Gembridge, all treatments must be fully disclosed, so you know exactly what kind of gemstone you are purchasing.
