Like a chameleon, Alexandrite can change its colour. First found in Russia, it became a symbol of Russian jewellery history. Large crystals of good quality are almost never found in nature, and any such find is considered to be unique. This significant design refers us to the motifs of the end of the XX century. A superb, clean, pear-shaped Alexandrite of 0.17 ct delicately surrounded by a scattering of round Diamonds of 0.34 ct each, iterative of the form of the centre stone. This ring with its Russian Alexandrite would be a unique addition to your jewellery collection as a piece with a rich history and unusual effects. Centre stone: Natural Colour-Changing Russian Alexandrite Colour: from bluish-green to purplish-red

A very special and phenomenal gemstone. This is a variety of chrysoberyl (a beryllium aluminium oxide) coloured by chromium, which shows the extraordinary property of changing colour depending on the quality of incident light. The first Russian alexandrite was discovered in the 1830s in the Urals and was named in honour of Tsar Alexander II. Fine Russian alexandrite exhibits a colour-change from green to red, as does alexandrite from Sri Lanka, while Brazilian material shows a very different blue to purple change. Alexandrite is a great gem in terms of durability as well as value as it rates 8.5 on Moh’s hardness scale.

Diamond is perhaps the most famous gemstone. It has many sought after gem properties: it’s incredibly hard (10/10 on Mohs scale), brilliant, lustrous and exhibits high dispersion. Most diamonds are billions of years old and composed simply of the element carbon. Diamonds in the white range have been popularised in engagement rings since the 1940s, while fancy colours are far rarer. Diamonds are also used to complement and accentuate the allure of coloured gemstones. Diamond is the birthstone for April and for 60th and 75th anniversaries

Gembridge Members source their gem-quality stones from countries all over the world, including many famous regions and mines. While origin is not an indicator of quality, it does provide context for buyers.

Origins listed on Gembridge may be stated as an opinion on a laboratory report or described by the Seller familiar with the stone’s provenance.

Gemstones come in many different forms. On Gembridge, we describe each by its shape in simple terms – round, square, cushion etc. Where relevant, we may also list the style of cutting, such as brilliant, step etc.

Although untreated gems are highly prized, there are many universally accepted treatments that enhance a gemstone’s beauty, including heating (for colour), and oiling (for clarity). On Gembridge, all treatments must be fully disclosed, so you know exactly what kind of gemstone you are purchasing.
